Fun game but a few things I dont understand...

I enjoy the game. However I am frustrated by what seems to be a glitch. When I begin play the computer always goes first and though they only place one domino they have two less pips than I do after playing that first pip. This happens over and over and I cant figure out why.
It makes it very difficult for me to catch up.
